Marielle Canter Weikel
Senior Director, Responsible Mining & Energy, Conservation International
At Conservation International for nearly 15 years, Marielle serves as Senior Director, Corporate Climate Solutions. She has also led CI’s program, strategy, and partnerships to engage multinational energy and mining companies in developing more sustainable environmental policies and practices. Previously Marielle led CI’s strategy to engage the private sector on freshwater conservation and served as a project manager for the Business & Biodiversity Offsets Program and the Energy & Biodiversity Initiative. Prior to joining CI Marielle worked as an environmental, health and safety consultant, and held numerous positions in the public policy and government arenas.
She holds a Masters of Environmental Management degree from Duke University and B.A. in Government and in Environmental Studies from the College of William and Mary, with coursework through Columbia University. Her master’s research focused on the implementation of four mining companies’ corporate environmental policies and strategies to understand what positive, measurable impact their implementation had on the environment. She has also researched environmental scarcity and conflict in East Africa’s Lake Victoria region and examined the links between water availability and urban sprawl in the southwestern United States.
